Review: ‘Mountainfilm on Tour’ is a moving portrait of ordinary heroes

I am a sucker for adventure documentaries, from “Free Solo” to “Edge of the Unknown.” So when I saw that the Hopkins Center for the Arts was showing “Mountainfilm on Tour,” I was ready to be similarly enraptured. Curated from the annual Mountainfilm festival held in Telluride, Co., it promised an “evening of adventure-packed short films.”
Unfortunately, the film failed to live up to this promise. However, “Mountainfilm on Tour” effectively portrayed human resilience, beyond the world of sports....

Review: ‘An Evening with Renée Elise Goldsberry’ was a dazzling love letter to the unifying power of music

For campus Broadway buffs and “Hamilton” fans, the evening of Oct. 17 was a night to remember. Renée Elise Goldsberry, the actress and singer who originated the role of Angelica Schuyler in “Hamilton” on Broadway, visited Dartmouth as part of the reopening weekend of the Hopkins Center for the Arts for an “evening of song.” Goldsberry’s 90-minute show was the first live performance on the newly-renovated David A. Graves Stage in Spaulding Auditorium at the Hop.
Like many of the events held over...

Hood Museum hosts Korean contemporary artist Choe U-Ram for an artist talk

Members of the Dartmouth community gathered in the Hood Museum of Art’s Gilman Auditorium on May 15 to listen to Korean contemporary artist Choe U-Ram reflect on his artistic journey. His art is featured in the exhibit “Attitude of Coexistence: Non-Humans in East Asian Art,” which has been displayed at the Hood since November 2024.
Choe’s work is characterized by a combination of the mechanical and the natural. With the help of complex robotics and engineering, Choe crafts kinetic sculptures — w...

Duncan Watson talks trash — and recycling — at Still North reading

On Jan. 29, approximately 20 people gathered in Still North Books & Bar for a reading from new author Duncan Watson. Watson read from “Everyone’s Trash: One Man Against 1.6 Billion Pounds,” his debut memoir about the “human connection with trash,” he said.
To Watson, who has been running Keene, N.H.’s solid waste program for 33 years, that human-trash connection is a positive one — a sentiment he hoped to communicate in the book. The book, released on Nov. 15, 2024, comes at a good time — we ar...

On Oct. 10, the Hood Museum of Art hosted its annual fall opening celebration to showcase the 12 exhibitions currently on display — eight of which are newly curated exhibitions on topics ranging from societal and cultural relationships with food to reflections on colonization. Visitors enjoyed music performed by jazz vocalist Grace Wallace while viewing the exhibitions located around the Hood’s 16 galleries.
In addition to live music, the evening featured refreshments, giveaways and remarks fro...

The Key to Communication: Why Penmanship is Necessary

Anything I hand-write and give to another comes with a disclaimer: Let me know if you can’t read anything. Most everyone — my friends, my family, my teachers, on more than one occasion — can agree that my handwriting is a disaster. Illegible. Unintelligible. A monstrosity. It wasn’t for a lack of trying. I was taught how to write cursive in the first grade. I force myself to slow down, painstakingly carve each character out one by one to ensure they’re neat, and yet without fail, my handwriting...

Revenge Bedtime Procrastination: What Is It and How Can We Avoid It?

It’s past your bedtime, and you know it.
After a long day of studying for exams/meeting with coworkers/working on projects, you’re drained and bone-weary and can’t wait to fall into bed where you might finally get some reprieve. By the time you do end up in bed, however, you don’t go to sleep. Instead, you read a few chapters from a book, answer text messages, doom scroll through Instagram, and hey, while you’re at it, you might as well check out the online sales you’ve been meaning to look at....

The Rise of Rupi Kaur and the Mainstream Poet

When I revived my love of poetry in ninth grade (not that it ever really died; I still have the horrible rhymes to prove it), I decided I needed a poetry book, something to coach me on what “good poetry” looked like. A Google search gave me a list of the “top poetry books,” and after hours spent weeding out the old white guys (sorry Walt Whitman), I settled on the top poet of 2017 and modern poetry darling: Rupi Kaur.
So, when I skimmed the content of Kaur’s newest book with high expectations, s...

Dominion v. Fox News: Everything You Need to Know

The Dominion Voting Systems defamation lawsuit against Fox News finally came to a close on Tuesday April 18 as Fox News settled for $787.5 million, making headlines as one of the largest defamation settlements in US history.

Although the trial itself is more recent news with articles concerning both parties continuing to be released, the roots of this lawsuit can be traced back to the 2020 presidential election. In the days and weeks following the election results, then-President Donald Trump a...
